Y Services Individual Therapy The success of individual therapy, in large part, rests on the quality of the relationship between you and your psychologist. This relationship is central to the successful outcome of all therapy modalities. Therefore, it is critical that you feel a "good fit" between what I offer in my practice and what you are needing from your therapy experience. My "style" of treatment relies heavily on two approaches to change: Cognitive-Behavioral and Interpersonal-Relational. Cognitive-Behavioral therapy approaches change from a perspective valuing the interaction between one's "automatic thoughts", behavioral coping approaches, and emotional wellness. An Interpersonal-Relational approach to treatment includes an emphasis on the relational aspect of peoples' struggles and their subsequent resolutions to those struggles. This approach values the therapeutic relationship and its capacity to offer insight into the relational issues you might face outside the therapy context. Together, these two approaches combined define much of what you might experience with me in a counseling setting. Relationship and Family Therapy Relationship counseling (marriage, pre-marriage, partnered, and dating) is somewhat different from individual counseling with the primary emphasis being on the health of the relationship as opposed to one individual or the other. It is often recommended that couples engage in individual counseling outside the relationship counseling experience to address specific individual issues they bring to the relationship. Emphases include: communication training, conflict resolution (often regarding specific issues such as financial management, the sexual relationship, in-law relationships, etc.) , parenting concerns, blending families, family planning and dealing with relationship loss. Group Therapy Currently no therapy groups are being offered. However, if you are interested specifically in group therapy, please contact me regarding your interest. If I have a variety of people expressing interest in group treatment, I will make every effort to offer a group to meet your needs. If that is not possible, I am happy to help you find local resources to identify a group for you. Christian-based Counseling Counseling with a specific Christian emphasis is available if you request that of me. If your spiritual identity is something you are interested in exploring or utilizing as an asset to your mental health, I am open to exploring that with you. However, if you are of another faith or are not a believer, I will certainly honor and respect your personal beliefs. Teaching / Workshops I am currently employed as an adjunct faculty member teaching on-line courses for Capella University. I have taught Grief and Bereavement Counseling, Professional Ethics, Counseling and Guidance with Diverse Populations, Ethnic and Cultural Awareness, and Dissertation Facilitation to MS and Ph.D. students in counseling and human services. I have additional experience teaching in a wide variety of settings. I have taught Master's level Theory, Introduction to Counseling, and Group Counseling courses as well as undergraduate Special Education, Multicultural Education, Communications, and Service-Learning courses. Additionally, I have experience facilitating a variety of workshop topics to various groups and organizations (topics including: depression management, anxiety disorders, communication, effective parenting, study skills & time management, communicating love in relationships, leadership, etc.). If your group or organization is interested in acquiring my teaching/training services, please contact me directly to discuss your need and whether or not I would be a good fit to meet that need. Evaluations / Diagnosis I am available to conduct personality assessments either in conjunction with your on-going treatment (with me or another therapist) or as a service in itself. Please inquire about specific testing available and your particular need for this service. At this time I do not offer intellectual, neuropsychological, or educational testing. You are welcome to contact me for referrals for cognitive or academic testing. Clinical Supervision I am licensed in the state of Indiana as a Health Service Provider in Psychology and am available to supervise doctoral level post-graduate psychologists for licensure hours. Please contact me to arrange an initial meeting to discuss provisions, needs, expectations, and state requirements of this supervisory relationship. Consultation Psychological consultation services are delivered in a wide variety of formats. If your group or organization is interested in consultation services, please contact me directly to discuss your need and whether or not I would be a good fit to meet that need. Phone Therapy I am not currently available to provide on-going phone therapy as a substitute for face-to-face counseling. However, if you are engaging in on-going therapy with me, I am available to schedule phone sessions between counseling sessions should the need arise or to substitute a face-to-face session if you are periodically unable to attend your regularly scheduled appointment. Phone sessions are billed for length of service at my standard rate. Email and Internet/Chat Therapy Currently, I am not engaging in email and internet/chat therapy. This type of counseling is still very new, and there are many unanswered questions about how well it works and whether or not it is an appropriate way to deliver therapeutic services. I am available to exchange simple emails regarding appointment scheduling and the like, but I will not engage in email or internet/chat therapy. Furthermore, you should understand that email is neither a secure nor confidential means of communicating, so I cannot guarantee your confidentiality if you contact me via email. Additionally, I am able to respond to phone messages more promptly throughout the day. Therefore, the best way to contact me is to call 317.650.0851 and leave me a message including your preferred phone number and a good time to reach you. I will return your call promptly. If your e-mail message contains detailed personal information or questions requiring an extended response, please include your phone number as I may prefer to have a discussion with you directly.
